However, the most commonly accepted theory is the state was named after the French province of Maine. Maine approximately covers an area of 33,215 sq miles with the coastline stretching up to 3,500 miles. There are 16 counties in the state of Maine.

Maine experiences a continental climate, especially in the southern parts of the state.

The state of Maine has around 6000 lakes and ponds with Lake Moosehead being the largest. With its coastal location, seafood is one of the most popular cuisines. Lobsters in particular are a specialty. Apart from the coastal topography, the state also has several eroded valleys and mountainous regions. The hilly areas help raising livestock, which results in several related industries such as dairy and poultry products. Agriculture is also practiced with blueberries, apples, and maple sugar forming the produce. In addition, there are industrial outputs like paper, lumber and wood products, electronic equipment, leather products, food processing and textiles.

Maine is known for the spectacular oceanic scenery and hence tourism is also one of the thriving industries. There are a number of beaches along the coast with scenic fishing villages. Maine also boasts of a dense forest cover, primarily consisting of pine trees. Hence the state is popularly nicknamed "The Pine Tree State."
